Please join us Sunday, September 17th for a mushroom foray at Wilderness Park in Lincoln, in tribute to the late mycologist Sam Stryker. Sam's brilliance and curiosity illuminated a space in our community. Meeting at the parking lot along Old Cheney Road, mycophiles and nature lovers will come together to commemorate Sam's passion for mycology and the natural world. From 9 am to noon, we'll embark on an immersive exploration of the park's rich fungal biodiversity. Please RSVP on our website so we can understand how many people may be coming.

Denise Wally and Rebecca Chandler will teach participants how to use lobster mushrooms (plus examples of a few others) to dye wool yarn and silk fabric. We use mordant to make the dyes deeper and colorfast. We will also alter the pH to get a different color palette.

This class will include a 30-minute talk providing a brief overview of the fungal kingdom, ethical foraging practices, and methods/patterns of identification. Additionally, there will be a 1-hour foray through Lauritzen Gardens' woodland trail to search for mushrooms and apply any identification methods learned during the talk. Participants will be shown how to use the Inaturalist app to help them identify organisms. As a pre-requisite, downloading and logging into the free Inaturalist phone app is encouraged, as it will greatly help with identification for most fungi. (hosted by Lauritzen Gardens)

Participants will learn how to pasteurize straw and use the vinegar tek method with hardwood fuel pellets to grow oysters and lion's mane mushrooms. Please bring something to take notes with. This event will be indoors.
